There's nothing quite like capturing the magic of an outdoor maternity session during golden hour. Golden hour, also known as the "magic hour," is the period of time just after sunrise or just before sunset when the sun is low in the sky, creating a warm and glowing light that's perfect for outdoor photography.
One of the primary benefits of scheduling a maternity session during golden hour is the beautiful and flattering light that it provides. Golden hour light is soft and diffused, with a warm and flattering glow that highlights natural beauty and creates a romantic and dreamy atmosphere. This light is especially flattering for expecting moms, as it helps to soften features and creates a gentle and ethereal effect.
Golden hour also provides an opportunity for unique and creative images. The warm tones of the light create a beautiful backdrop for outdoor maternity photos especially during winter when landscape and trees are bare.
All of my maternity sessions are done during golden hour. Here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a successful shoot:
Timing is Key: I usually plan these sessions about 1 hour before sunset for families with children and 30 minutes before sunset for those without. Your session time is the time I'd like to start shooting, so plan to arrive earlier if clothing needs to be chanages.
Plan Your Day: If you have younger kids that will be participating in the maternity session it is important to remember that summer sunsets are late! You may need to plan an extra nap, a later dinner, etc. I know this can be a struggle, but typically once kids are in a new envitonment, especially being outside I can get them to cooperate long enough!
Dress for Success: Soft and flowing fabrics will complement the romantic and dreamy atmosphere of the shoot. Look at the light coming through her dress! Beautiful. Solid colors or muted prints work well for maternity sessions, and it's important to avoid patterns or bright colors that may detract from the warm and flattering light of golden hour.
Embrace the Moment: Golden hour is a magical time, and it's important to embrace the moment and capture the beauty and romance of the shoot. Relax, enjoy the experience, and be open to creative and spontaneous moments that may arise during the shoot.
Maternity sessions take place on my personal property of 13 acres in Georgetown, KY. There is a tree swing on the property that is an option for images during your maternity session.

I am so happy you are considering me to be a part of this special time in your life! I know how overwhelming it can be to find a photographer you trust to photograph the most valuable little human in your life! I realize I am often one of the first "non-family members" (outside of hospital staff) to hold your new baby and I consider that a huge honor and responsibility.
I offer new parents a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere where they can watch their newborn be photographed. I remove the stress that portraits typically cause by providing everything you need including clothing, props and accessories. I will create timeless images of your new family and your baby that you will cherish deeply...even more than you realize now. As a mother of 3, my oldest now 11, I know I would give anything to slow down time. While I can't slow it down, I can freeze it by capturing your moments that create beautiful memories.
My studio is located in Georgetown, KY just 30 minutes from Lexington, KY. I hope to meet you soon!
